MD/Ph. D Program - The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The MD- Ph. D Program is a joint degree program for students who plan careers in biomedical research and academic medicine. The program, sponsored primarily by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through its national Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), provides fellowship support for selected and highly qualified students. Virtually all students who enter the program have had intensive research experiences prior to matriculation. The MD and Ph. D degrees are obtained in an average of seven years and are conferred by the awarding Faculties upon completion of requirements for both degrees. Applicants to the MD- Ph. D Program must apply to the Harvard Medical School (HMS) via the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) and to the MD/Ph. Welcome to the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Princeton University MD/PhD Program. Research in medical and biological science relies more on interdisciplinary thought than ever before. MD-PhD Dual Degree Training MD-PhD programs provide training in both medicine and research. They are specifically designed for those who want to become research physicians. The MD/PhD program seeks to integrate and streamline training as much as possible. D - - School of Medicine, Emory University. Dedicated to training exceptional students from a variety of disciplines who will become the next leaders in clinical academic medicine and biomedical research, the MD/Ph. D Program combines the advantages of rigorous preparation in clinical medicine with interdisciplinary training in the basic research. The Emory MD/Ph. D Program is an NIH sponsored Medical Scientist Training Program. It is designed to provide highly qualified students with the in- depth, high- caliber research training and medical education needed by academicians of the future. Most students who pursue the MD/Ph. D track complete the first eighteen months of basic medical science education, followed by several years of graduate study, followed by a set of clinical requirements for the third and fourth years of medical school (see "MD Curriculum"). While in their first and second years of the medical school curriculum, MD/Ph. D students are also required to attend special journal clubs and graduate seminars to strengthen their understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying disease and to develop scientific reasoning and critical thinking skills. Research rotations and graduate coursework are conducted in the 4th semester prior to formal entry into the Laney Graduate School. The MD/Ph. D program seeks to integrate and streamline training as much as possible. Students are provided with multiple formal and informal opportunities for faculty and peer mentoring. The annual student retreat incorporates sessions devoted to student transitions and future career development. Interdisciplinary graduate study in the biomedical sciences is largely performed in the Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences. This division of the Laney Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offers interdisciplinary training in the following life science areas: Biochemistry, Cell & Developmental Biology. Cancer Biology. Genetics & Molecular Biology. Immunology & Molecular Pathogenesis. Microbiology & Molecular Genetics. Molecular & Systems Pharmacology. Neuroscience. Population Biology, Ecology & Evolution. Additionally, students may also choose to perform their research and studies in one of the many other graduate training programs, offered in in partnership with the Laney Graduate School of Arts and Science, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Rollins School of Public Health. Such as, but not limited to: Anthropology. Biomedical Engineering. Chemistry. History. Physics. Psychology. The program aims to provide funding for all NIH MD/PhD students at a level similar to that received by MD/PhD students in MSTP-funded combined-degree training around the country. We strongly advise all our current students to consider applying for these grants. level of training or beyond. There are separate loan repayment programs for those working in the NIH intramural program and those working outside of NIH. Current Students. Overview; Events/Activities; FAQ. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University offers the PhD and master's degrees in 57 programs of study across the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and in conjunction with Harvard's professional schools. These programs of medical and graduate education allow MD-PhD students to customize their educational paths. A special feature of our Program is the requirement that at the end of the second year in the Program, all students participate in 6 months of clinical rotations prior to entering the PhD phase of their training, usually in January of their 3rd year. In 1964 the NIH created Medical Scientist Training Program to begin funding this medical and research education. The first programs to receive funding were at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Furthermore, many non-MSTP medical schools have MD-PhD programs that are not supported by the NIH but offer similar training opportunities and grant money. Allied-institution programs. The Doctorate of Medicine and of Philosophy (MD–PhD) is a dual doctoral degree for physician–scientists. The degree is granted by medical schools often through the Medical Scientist Training Program or other non-MSTP MD-PhD programs.
